Full Length Reaction Guide

We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

DAMN; I never really put that much thought into that scene and never heard anyone break it down like you did. I'm glad you did because it makes that scene so much more powerful in showing the details of a character and their perspective/attitude about things. It makes so much sense now!

I hope this won't be considered a spoiler, but I think The Expanse showrunners were really clever to include the original authors in the writing team - any change from the books made sense for the show. ** Possible spoiler ** I was very happy with how this show's final season was handled. They really took notes and learned the lesson from Game of Thrones about not cramming all the remaining books/ideas into a shortened season and staying true to the pacing of the books. Guess it helps that that the books were all complete so they never had to improvise. I love seeing you two starting to get really invested in the show.

... and how the System could be colonized at all. We just can't go fast enough today to meaningfully go back and forth between Earth and the Belt. Nobody wants to give up YEARS for that.

PNWKyle

Hey guys fyi... the reason they showed the backstory of the fusion drive is because they love being as accurate as possible when it comes to the science stuff. And the amount of time rocket engines can maintain 1G of thrust in space is measured in MINUTES with our current technology. So, this backstory was them explaining how it's possible that they can fly around in space for months without refueling.

Just like DARK and Severance, I love your Expanse reactions because you are both so locked in, you catch most of the important details, you love the characters, and you have wonderful insights and theories. The answers will come in time. I'm sure others have pointed out, Ganymede is one of the moons of Jupiter, and what was destroyed in orbit was one of the mirrors that reflect sunlight to the agricultural domes on the surface. It is a station owned jointly by Earth and Mars, which is why they have a line on the surface delineating UN vs Martian control.

Sheri

"What the fuck just happened, WHAT IS HAPPENING" You should just get use to saying that for a while.

Beat Conductor

The best thing is this show only improves as it goes. It doesn't suffer like many shows where its just kinda falls off and they make up filler episodes. It's just peak Television.

Ryan

The coping about Millers death is strong in you two 😂

Minister Kosh

Good point that we could have done with more displayed grief over Miller, to make his death have more gravity. I think you actually got the point of Epstein's story and sumerised it well. Basically, as he said, Technology changes everything, first the Epstein Drive, now the Protomolecule. Nothing is certain from now on. The big silver pentagons in orbit round Ganymede are mirrors, they concentrate sunlight down to the farms on the surface, the Ag domes (Agricultural Domes). Re the action in orbit over Ganymede - it is confusing and very fast, what I believe happened (open to corrections) is that overwatch, the marines navy transport needed line of sight down to the surface, which the mirrors were blocking, so they shot through them, breaking them up. The UN, also in orbit took that as an aggressive action and fired on the Martian ships and it escalated from there. Freakin' love Avarasara's epic speech threatening Mao, legendary. But believe me, there are even greater epic deliveries coming. gut wrenching and uplifting.

Seeing Spartan this hyped is making so many upcoming iconic moments come to mind. And seeing Pudgey locked in organizing her thoughts on the plot because she's engaged in the story is great! Both of you are locked in and spitballing ideas and seem to be having a great time with the show. It's really fun! Thanks for sharing, and looking forward to more!

Trepanation21

The dead living legend, Detective Miller! It very sad about the Martian Captain, killed for reasons no one can comprehend yet.

Interestingly, I've never really seen that Avasarala scene as her "annihilating" Errinwright, so much as her strategically tipping her hand a little bit to see how he'll react. Her smile as she's leaving the room at the very end of the scene is what really cements that feeling for me. She's very direct with him in that scene, more so than she's' been in a while, and seems to be intentionally letting on that she knows Errinwright was more connected to Mao and his research than he's letting on. I don't think she's venting just to vent, but rather to make sure he knows that she knows he was involved to at least some degree. What Errinwright does with that information, always seemed to be Avasarala's endgame in that scene to me.

Regarding Alex, there are hints of him having a lot of pride and being pretty sensitive to people questioning his competence or seeing him as weak. When he was with the Martian Navy, they apparently didn't believe he was good enough to pilot a ship like the Rocinante, and that seems to have informed a lot of his personality quirks. He's hinted to both Amos and Drummer that he hasn't spoken to his family since the Canterbury was destroyed because he likes the idea of having died as a hero, and piloting a ship that the Martian brass thought he couldn't is the best feeling he's ever had. So Amos telling Alex that he's weak and acting like he needs to be saved rubs him the wrong way as it harkens back to what the Martians thought of him. Amos doesn't fully understand all that, but he knew that Alex wanted to feel like a bigger man, so Amos essentially taunted Alex so that Alex could swing on him and feel strong. That's what Alex meant by asking Amos if this was his messed-up way of apologizing. Alex is of course ultimately a good person and wants to help people, but I also think he likes to specifically *think of himself* as someone who helps people. I think in comparison to someone like Holden for example, Alex has a bit more pride in being thought of as a hero.

It will keep getting better and better cant wait for you to see it

Marco Inaros

It does just keep getting better. This series finds its stride and continues to deliver. Glad you're enjoying it so much.

PNWKyle

I also really liked that Martian commander and was upset when he died. He was a good guy and I liked how he was with Bobby and her team. All the shit that Bobby just went through with her team down on Ganymede, terrifying honestly…

AnastasiyaK

Also they weren't really close to Miller. The only one with any sort of connection was Naomi and that's only that they were both belters. On top of that the show doesn't display the passage of time that well, but we can assume that it has been several days.

Golladan

The scene where Holden and Naomi tell Amos and Alex about them being a couple is one of my favorites, so funny… and Amos’s line to Holden and Holden’s confused face in response was hilarious 😂 Amos really is one of a kind 😂 My other favorite scene in this episode is the absolute annihilation Chrisjen does of Mao and Errinwright. She is so ruthless and badass and not to be fucked with. Love her so much. Ooooh just so much good stuff coming up, can’t wait to see y’all’s reactions!

AnastasiyaK

Ganymede, where the marines were attacked, is a agriculture station under joint UN/Mars control that supplied a lot of the food to the outer systems. (Also, no spoilers, but Spartan's theorycrafting is pretty solid on this one for the most part)

TM2

The big planet Spartan thought was Venus is actually Jupiter! Distinguishable with its “eye” storm. Ganymede is one of Jupiter’s many moons. In the show, it’s an agricultural and research station that grows food for the belt. The big silver “space ship” that got destroyed is one of the mirrors set up over Ganymede to reflect sunlight (and help plants grow I guess). And about the crew not mourning Miller, I get it! We could have seen more interpersonal grief among the crew. On the other hand, I think in the context of this world, death for belters and people in space is a possibility at any chance. Think about it, you’re in space and one little Malfunction could kill you. No gravity, no oxygen, NO GROUND, no light. Also living as a belter is dangerous as it is. They don’t grow up in optimal environmental conditions. think belters culturally have a different relationship with death than we do. They mourn, but death is also more a part of their life than it is in ours during peacetime.

Hoary Old Bitch

Pudgey translating that Belter conversation was pretty hilarious. 🤣

I also like how the Epstein story ends by Jupiter, and as we zoom into Ganymede features start popping into existence to the "present" day. Solomon Epstein was the inventor of the Epstein Drive. It's what allowed humanity to move past Mars. And allowed Mars to gain its independence. It's technology that literally changed humanity. That big thing that was destroyed over Ganymede is a big orbital mirror. Ganymede is a farming station. The mirrors help direct sunlight. Its destruction was just a casualty of Mars and Earth suddenly engaging over Ganymede.

Golladan

Yay finally more Expanse!! I know we’re in the middle of season 2 but this is the actual start of season 2/book 2 and I’m super excited for all that’s to come!

AnastasiyaK

Nothing changed in the opening this episode. Nothing will change until season 3. I love the way this episode starts. With MCR as it is at the "present" (even with Deimos destroyed). And slowly moving back in time to "137 years ago".

Golladan

Aptly named episode.

Golladan

Oh boy this one will be a blast !!! God I envy you guys, watching this for the first time. But hey that's why I am here... To relive what it is like watching this for the first time. Even if it is just through your eyes. As for the inclusion of the Epstein drive. It's about the title ... Paradigm Shift. The Epstein drive changed the 'game'. It allowed for humans to go faster and further. And we are now seeing another Paradigm Shift. Or at the least the start of it.
