2025-08-08 01:35:48 +0000 UTCHate to be that "well, actually" guy, but just FYI... beratna does indeed mean brother (used in both the literal and figurative sense), but the Belter word for sister is sésata. "Setara" means "star," and in addition to its literal meaning, it's used as a Belter term of endearment. So when Dawes calls Naomi "setara," it's actually borderline inappropriate, given that he doesn't actually know her. It's approximately equivalent to calling a woman you don't know well "sweetheart" or "babe." Of course, I'm sure Dawes thinks it's harmless and friendly, and he may even mean it that way. But still, it gives you a little insight into the kind of guy that Dawes is.

A few non-spoilery things to clarify stuff you wondered about: - Dawes’ (and other older Belters’) neck scars are a result of older vac suit helmets that didn’t have proper protection around the suit-helmet seal. If a Belter was working in space and they were in sunlight for too long, that metal seal would burn their skin and lead to scarring. A lot of younger Belters, like Drummer and Diogo, get tattoos around their necks in the same pattern to honor the older Belters’ work and sacrifice, and to recognize the Belt’s historical oppression by the Inners (which does refer to the inner planets, like Pudgey thought). - Dawes called Holden “beratna” and Naomi “setara.” These translate to “brother” and “sister,” respectively. It calls back to Dawes telling Miller that he has millions of brothers and sisters in the Belt. It’s a term of endearment and respect. Dawes calling Naomi setara doesn’t necessarily mean he knew her previously, but he does know who she is, and is indicating some degree of respect for her. It’s debatable how sincere he was in calling Holden beratna. - Dawes was talking about Miller when he said “You’re just missing the hat” to Holden. Not that it would have made any sense to Holden since he never knew Miller with the hat. - A purple heart in the US military is awarded to a service member who is wounded or killed in action. - I can’t recall if you’ve already picked up on it, but Gunny’s full name and rank is Gunnery Sergeant Roberta “Bobbie” Draper.
