Yeah, this one always hits really hard.

That's really interesting, I never knew that. In Australia we have the wake after the funeral too (not surprisingly given our English ties). I've always thought it was strange when I watched this episode previously.

Responding to your outro… and this is long as I am now quite curious as to what goes on in the UK (much more so than my curiosity of what you know of the Wildcat offense 😃) seems like another difference across the pond… I don’t even remotely understand the concept of a wake after a funeral. I would love to hear what typically happens in the UK and what a “wake” is there. Seems like a wake in the UK is a repast in the US? This might not be UK compared to USA but perhaps Protestant and Catholic differences? I’m Catholic, but have seen the process done the same way with Protestant wakes and funerals, so I don’t really know if it is a religious or country difference. The wake, at least in the USA, is when everyone can pay their respects, and view the body. Usually it is at the funeral home. Often times there are multiple times for wakes. Sometimes two timeframes, sometimes, three, four. That’s when anyone who knows the deceased or their family can pay their respects. This wake was obviously different as the body was so mangled that it could not be displayed. I had always thought that it was called a “wake” because back hundreds of years ago, sometimes they thought someone was dead but they really weren’t, and in the rare circumstance that a person would literally “wake up” in their own casket, people were there to witness and make sure the person wasn’t buried alive. My uncle (May he rest in peace) was a priest and worked at the Vatican for a while, where they investigated causes for canonization (Catholic process of becoming declared a saint). He told me that sometimes this would be exhuming a body, and once, in a really old grave, they found scratch marks in the top interior of the coffin, which meant the person was buried alive accidentally, and that disqualified them from canonization because the scratch marks may have been a sign of desperation, losing hope, and therefore they could not be certain that the person did not lose their faith at the end. There is a theological explanation for this but this post is already long and this is a sports channel not a theology channel. Anyway, that’s what the wake is for, and then we have the funeral, for my family it is always Mass and then the actual burial, and after that some sort of reception or meal (on my Italian side we call it a repast), and the Mass/Funeral/Repast is only attended by the very close friends and family.
