Tywin tried to fight Robert Stark (the GOAT) who is currently invading the Lannisters vassals (Westerlands). Tywin wants to cross a river which is near Riverrun (Caitlyn’s home) but Edmure Tully (since you already in season 3 you met him) Robbs uncle and Cats brother heroically defeats Tywin in multiple skirmishes. Since Tywin isn’t able to cross the river he decides to march on Kings Landing. Stannis would have won if Tywin wouldn’t have been humbled. Stannis didn’t expect Tywin to just let Robb take his home country so he got surprised.
