I figure what we see in the show is what Narrator-Ted is picturing in his head as he tells the story. So, most of it is real, but sometimes we see details he withholds from his kids (like here with the "you're bigger" comment), sometimes we see things he's making up because it's a good story (like Lily and Marshall jumping down from the fire escape in "Okay Awesome" in season 1), and so on.

Obviously he remembers he just showed us, why would he say that if he’d just told the kids two seconds ago the actual reason? You have to listen to Bob Saget’s monologues
