It wasn't always awkward between them, they had great banter and match each other's sense of humor (a great example of this is season 6 episode 17). Haley makes Andy's life more adventurous and exciting and Andy makes Haley more grounded and ambitious, whereas she reverts back to a teenager when she is with Dylan and is also his mother. But hey, that's just my opinion
