It was a thing during Obama's presidency, yeah. Democrats often got upset that he was always SO diplomatic and wanted to see him publicly fight a little harder against the Republicans and Tea Party idiots railroading him. He's spoken about it a few times since leaving office.

It never crossed my mind that the interpreter here is analogous to an overzealous supporter who interprets a politician's words in the most extreme way possible. No. In my experience president's remain diplomatic when it comes to airing their grievances publicly against political rivals. To do otherwise can incite aggressive/extreme behavior in citizens that support the President. I do know of one pres who did not adhere to that role. His supporters ended up illegally assaulting and vandalizing a government building.
