Winters is still the battalion XO (executive officer) now. He still has the "desk job". Nothing has changed. It's just a part of his new job. He now manages more of the whole battalion with all companies, Easy included. The Battle of Bulge didn't change this, as you see Colonel Strayer (the officer they said was away) does end up making it there in time. During the episode they introduce you to Easy's new Lieutenant Norman Dike, who plays a prominent role in the next few episodes. You'll see moving forward that Winters no longer commands only Easy.
