Winters promotion to XO means he can effectively command multiple companies in the field … but nobody can be everywhere at once, especially across the area guarded by many hundreds of soldiers. So when they are in a stationary posture, like in Holland, his job is more paperwork and desk-bound work. But in crisis and when the companies are heading into combat, commanders like Winters will have to decide best how to coordinate/organize larger maneuvers. Is that best done at the front?

When the UK entered the war in 1939, Churchill and Us President Roosevelt struck a deal called “cash and carry,” later changed to the “lend lease program,; for 3 years before the US joined the US was making weapons to sell then “lend” to the UK and also somewhat to the Soviets. USA has the luxury of two great defenses, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and while UK was suffering through the Blitz and for a time the only country left actively fighting Hitler, and then later once the USSR was invaded by the Germans, they were being supplied by weapons made in the USA. No idea what percentage of American made weapons would be present in a UK regiment but it would not surprise me at all if our two countries came to some kind of arrangement for interchangeable ammo at the very least. I bet Pete Finch would know a lot more about this aspect.
