In the US, you can take up to 12 weeks of unpaid FMLA leave (this stacks with other statutory leave, so for example, if you use all 12 weeks of FMLA for maternity leave/paternity leave, and then have a death in the family, you’re out of leave). Anything paid is completely at the employer’s discretion. My wife and I each got four months, which was considered generous, but also both faced strong workplace pressure to take less than our full allotment.
