This is def the intro to fantasy and the literal set bar for what to expect, but lotr does a great job suppressing the fantasy aspect. Gandalf isn’t casting spells and wiping out armies. Nothing is more overdone. The Ents won their battle and that was it (excluding the book and expanded lore)

You would never guess upon just seeing the two in comparison. To be honest compared to todays bloated movie budgets those film were cheap as heck. For another comparison: The new snow white cost 209 million Dollars to produce (not counting marketing). All three (!!!) lord of the rings movies combined cost 281 million dollars. I would say they were a steal.
