No, it was two different people that were injured. Someone was blinded, and then separately the Captain (the guy yelling everything and acting tough) "lost it". The subplot being that the guy talking the biggest game was the first to lose it when the shit hit the fan. The guy who was promoted to Corporal is Lew "Chuckler" Juergens.
