Although the attack in this episode is different from what happened in real life, meatwave attacks like what's depicted in this episode have happened historically. It happened a lot more during WW1 because of the lack of in-field radios. In leu of radios, the way attacks were coordinated were through time tables. So the artillery team gets an order to bomb the hell out of enemy positions at 0200, then the infantry goes and clears what remains of whatever didn't get blown up by artillery at 0215. The problem with time tables is, if anything goes wrong with the artillery shelling, the infantry have no idea that they are running into machinegun fire until it's too late. Once they've committed and given away their position they can't easily pull back without being annihilate, so it's forward through the enemy trenches or death. Having access to explosives and grenades also makes taking entrenched positions much much less costly, but the Japanese soldiers in these episodes had been stranded on the island under constant fire for days/weeks with no reinforcements or supplies. so they probably didn't have much of a choice other than to run at them. In real life, this battle took place over many days, so they actually lasted even longer than is portrayed here. I think that the liberties they take with making a story out of the real events justify calling The Pacific a "show" and the people we are watching "characters." They are based on real people and real events, but ultimately they are fictional, and they do and say things that are not 100% accurate to what happened in real life. It's also important that all the things they change COULD have happened. Love y'all's reactions!

The army units that are in this episode are not the replacements that Easy Company would have been part of. This battle happened earlier than that. The U.S. Army was participating in the Pacific theater as well. The battle of Guadalcanal started in 1942.

Nope, just us getting used to a new set up and sometimes forgetting to change the background when we record the next show

You guys put the wrong background kind of a lot... is that an inside joke on your Patreon that I don't know about?

No worries! Everyone makes mistakes. Thanks for your hard work :)
