-"It took a second bomb to end it" This is debatable. The carpet bombings we inflicted on them were actually more devastating and it's been said that the Soviet invasion of Manchuria was what actually got them to surrender (evidenced by the fact that after the first bomb, Japanese leadership didn't even have a meeting about it). The atomic bombs were definitely the catalyst for the cold war though.

Imperial Japanese Army was essentially a death cult. Zero regard for human life… neither their enemies nor their own. That, and the brutal conditions…. Made combat in the Pacific the most brutal, hands down. This is one reason - the Japanese “no surrender mentality” - why eventually US President Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bombs to end the war. And it took a second bomb to end it. The war ended in 1945. Throughout the 50s and 60s there were stories of Japanese soldiers on remote islands finally surrendering. The last Japanese soldier to surrender was one Hiroo Onora (probably spelled it wrong) in 1974! Almost 30 full years after the war was over. Korean War had come and gone. Vietnam War was almost over. Yet here is this one man in a remote area of the Philippines who was still fighting a war that had been over for nearly 30 years. The atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers against the Chinese, especially in “The Rape of Nanjing”, were so horrific that EVEN a Nazi officer wrote home saying he could not fathom the level of barbarity. A freaking Nazi!

That night bombardment about 17 minutes in reminds me of Bastogne, except temps in the 90s (32 or so plus Celcius if my math is right)

FYI there is a version with the intro from the still living heroes like in the first.

Great reaction as always guys. 3rd degree burns are the most severe. The Japanese thought the American military was inferior but in addition the Japanese mentality was to fight to the death, anything else was dishonorable they just kept attacking. The army troops were not reinforcements from Europe but were from the Philippines and other Pacific bases many of which were evacuated after the Japanese overtook them in December of 41. When Winters was talking about going to the Pacific it was 1945. The battle for Guadalcanal lasted from August of 42 through February of 43. That was kind of referred to when the Marine was wearing the Santa hat.

This background mix up on the 4th of July, 249 years after we said FU to the Brits, feels a little intentional. Imma let it slide this time. If it happens on the 250th, we're gonna have words.

Great watch. The Japanese army thought of Americans as being weak and would be able to just charge them and win outright in any battle. This of course was not the case, and they lost lots of men with this type of tactics in the first parts of the war. They changed to a more dig and wait type tactic, which was much more deadly for Americans. Guadalcanal is a battle over 6 plus months long, more like lots of smaller battles, bombings, air raids, sea battles etc. Also do not google John Basilone, you will get spoilers, but I wanted to say he is actually from Buffalo NY. Go Bills!
