I think if no one was around then the tree would still make a noise. Sure, we didn’t hear it. But it still happened. The five senses humans share aren’t the end all/be all of the universe. If we’re basing whether or not something happened purely on our sense of it, then the tree never fell in the first place. We didn’t see it fall. How do we know?

Neither did we 😂 The recording device doesn’t prove sound was heard, it just proves that pressure waves hit the microphone. The device converts the waves into an electrical signal, which you only experience as sound when you play it back. It doesn’t prove that sound exists without perception. Take all recording/listening devices out the equation, there is nothing to pick up those sound waves. I don’t know the correct answer, but I think that’s the beauty of the thought experiment.

Didn't expect this episode to start with 5 minutes of Damo & Nick's Philosophical Hour! Personally I'd say that if a tree falls and there's no one around to hear it, it very much does make a sound. Cause if you'd put an unmanned camera on there and replayed the footage afterwards, surely you'd be able to hear a sound, right? As a chart/pop music stats anorak, I was a little bugged by Phil's (otherwise quite witty) cassingle remark. Cassingles were a very late-80s/early-90s thing and wouldn't have been around yet for Olivia Newton-John's 'Physical' from 1981. (Needless to say, I shall write a strongly worded letter to the episode writers responsible.)

Thank you, thank you internet strangers for helping this person who was committed recently for depression and anxiety, turn away from suicide and toward life. It know that's a heavy burden but the burden is not yours. I thought about your laughs and it keeps me moving on minute by minute. So thank you, kind internet strangers
