2025-08-15 14:46:53 +0000 UTCOne final word about the battle on Peleliu: General MacArthur wanted the island taken to help support the air campaign in retaking the Phillippine islands later in the war. As it turned out he decided not to use the air fields on Peleliu. That whole assault was basically for nothing at all. They could have blockaded it with the navy and starved them out like they did on Truk island. Incredible waste of life.
