The thing about serving is, even if you're "in the shit" and experienced terrible things, a ton of guys miss it for the rest of their lives. Along with the PTSD, there is also a loss of purpose and brotherhood. A loss of adrenaline that you can never get back with anything else in life. Civilians think "oh those poor troops, all the things they went through" and sure, that's true - they may not recognize the fact that for many, it's also the best thing they've ever done and nothing will fill that void. Extremely bittersweet for many of my guys, especially now into our 40s

Remember Eugene's father was a doctor who treated veterans of the first world War and understood what he was going through. If you think back to the early episodes he told Eugene he didn't want him to go through what he had seen because it changes people.
