They would have had no more chance to plan all this than to make their promises before hand. A promise to move heaven and earth to earn her freedom. How do you even earn a princess from someone who wants for nothing. But more importantly, she believed in him. She waited for him, kept herself for him, prayed for him with her dancing and never lost faith. All while not being able to see him or correspond with him. That is amazing. Surely it was the will of heaven.

A lady in waiting would hope to marry an officer or official but a concubine is essentially married to the emperor even if she is sharing him with 80-100 others you are still one of less than 100 in all the empire.

While he has all the power in the country, he can't disobay the rules set by his ancestors. In this case you can kinda see him as a breeding horse. While his situation is not as bad as concubines, i honestly doubt he has the option to love, wether the woman of his choosing or even his own children.
