Re:Zero S2 EP 4
Added 2024-04-26 05:38:22 +0000 UTCwhat a heart warming way to face his past tbh, haram his poor parents. But also, I feel like its really hinting at the fact that Subaru is pride and something feels slightly off about his mom tbh- something is a lil fishy rn fr.

He had a pretty strong inferiority complex being compared to his father constantly. It kinda goes back to his reaction with Julius too. It put him in a bad place to know he could never be good enough to be that and it resulted in him giving up at home and giving up again in season 1. In season 1 we saw his first browth after the infamous rem speech but this is his next milestone growth to recognize that part of himself that always made him anxious and shut down anytime he could be as good or as special as someone else.

2025-10-25 11:13:00 +0000 UTCI know it's a bit late, but the focus of this episode on Subaru's backstory, with his father and mother, in one word is primarily about depression. You really overthought it at the beginning lol

This was basically something subaru had to confront from his past and regrets in order to get through the trial. I know your already quite ahead so hopefully the comments helped out

2024-06-15 17:33:53 +0000 UTCTBF, him not being able to go back is something Subaru came up with himself. No one has ever said there is no way back. He decides this based on a feeling deep down inside that he's stuck there. In his defense, he also has absolutely no idea how he got there and even those that are knowledgeable about the world have no answers for him about any of that. I hesitate to say more than this since more details of this were cut content from season 1 that may be added back in later seasons.

2024-04-28 22:27:29 +0000 UTCwait is it real that he can't ever return? I don't see how thats not possible for him, cause tbh it makes more sense that he can since he randomly found himself here

2024-04-28 22:26:31 +0000 UTCSo there is something that the anime forgot to mention and that may or may not be important in the future, and its the reason of why made a "fool" out of himself on high school. On the web novel, its told to us that on his first day of high school he wanted to start fresh so he dress up like a girl when to school and called himself natsumi schwarz, however, due to his voice people found out and start making fun of him. This traumatize subaru and he decided to never cross dress again even tho he like it.

2024-04-26 12:00:02 +0000 UTCSo, yeah, as you suspected, that was all part of the trial. Subaru facing his past and saying the things to his parents he never got to in real life before he was Isekai'ed. In real life, he never said goodbye to his parents before he left on the night he was isekai'ed or ever explained anything to them about what he had been going through that stopped him from going to school. All this because he felt he couldn't live up to being his father's son. The weight of it mentally and emotionally crushed the young Subaru as he realized he wasn't able to live up to the man his father is. When his dad said about Subaru taking care of them when they are older and Subaru said that he can't, it's because deep down inside Subaru has already realized that he will likely never be able to return to Japan and will probably never see his real parents again. All that being said, if you look back at season one, this explains a lot of why he acted the way he did when he first got to Lagunica.

2024-04-26 07:50:36 +0000 UTCThe author of Re:Zero was asked how his parents are dealing with the disappearance of their son. And the answer is: terribly. Police was reported and searches were made but nothing about the whereabouts of Subaru was found. His mother is depressed and his father is doing his best to support her and keep the hope alive of finding their son again. Some sad shit. Considering they both were aware of Subaru's issues, I bet they fear he committed suicide.

2024-04-26 06:56:05 +0000 UTCSeeing his past and the issues he was dealing with help recontextualize his behavior in the first season. Why he was so insecure about his powerlessness, why he was trying too hard to be useful but just essentially embarrassed himself and Emilia.. pushing her away in the process. Coming to this new world was supposed to be a new start. A chance to reinvent himself. He came expecting magical powers and charisma to fill that void of being useless and never good enough from his old world. But none of those expectations were met.. leading him to his lowest point realizing nothing's changed. He was still the same powerless good for nothing loser he's always thought of himself to be. Thank goodness Rem saved him and helped him realize that despite his flaws and mistakes.. he has done some good things. No his parents don't know about the fantasy world. That final scene with his mother always kills me. The last words she said to him were "take care" but he didn't say anything back. None of them knew what was about to happen. Subaru never knew that would be the last time he would see them before he was transported. So the fact he didn't acknoweledge his mother before he left stings alot.
