For real!!! “Isekai” is literally Japanese for “another world.” I don’t get how that is lost on so damn many people. An “isekai” anime takes place in a “world” or dimension or reality different from the place the main character is introduced as being from. A “reincarnation” story is when the MC has died and is reborn/remade as a different person with their past memories. Pretty different things, if you actually think about it. The issue is just that so many isekais involve reincarnation, whereas reincarnation stories are far fewer in number, as far as I know. The friggin’ number of times I’ve heard Oshi no Ko being called an isekai…..argh!

2025-07-06 10:01:49 +0000 UTCYou are 100% correct, Faroh. Oshi No Ko is not an Isekai. The number of times I see people confuse a Reincarnation story with an Isekai is truly staggering. Isekai requires the characters to be in a new world regardless of how they got there. And Reverse Isekai is when characters from another world come to ours. Can a story be both an Isekai and a Reincarnation story? Sure, but they don't have to be. They can be one without the other.
