Roswaal's journey of falling in love is very similar to Subaru and Emilia. You could almost say Roswaal is a twisted parallel to who Subaru could become. Roswaal fell in love with Echidna after she saved him and became devoted to helping her. Similar to how Subaru's feelings started from her saving him in the alley and giving him a place to belong. Roswaal clearly feels the same way for Echidna and the Sanctuary. Its where they were happy for a long time until it was all shattered and he lost Echidna. The man has spent 400 years longing for Echidna and trying to get her back..clinging to the past essentially. The same as Garfiel, and seems even Beatrice is stuck in the past. The thing about that conversation with Garfiel regarding facing the past, Garfiel was able to recognize he has to move on and start living. The difference is, Roswaal doesn't see anything wrong with clinging to the past. He embraces it as a strength. That's where his mentality comes from. Losing Echidna obviously broke him. He probably feels he wasn't good enough or strong enough to protect Echidna, that's why he lost her. With the mindset that "everyone is fundamentally weak, you can't succeed at fulfilling your desires unless you sacrifice everything for that one thing," you start to see who Roswaal is and why he is this way. Just like Subaru, he's a broken man who has lost loved ones. He is doing everything in his power to regain it back.. in the process he has lost his humanity with the rationalization that sacrifices must be made for the sake of the goal. Subaru easily could have gone down this route too with his Return by Death. Abusing RBD, his mental health and his humanity for the sake of the goal of saving everyone. As long as the goal can be reached.. nothing else matters. Satella and the other witches, and Otto helped him realize that is the wrong state to be in. Subaru has to love himself more, by not abusing RBD as the first solution to problems. Instead reach out for help and rely on the strength of others. Realize that people in your life care and love you.. and can help you if you need it. Roswaal essentially is a bad route for who Subaru could become. The question now is.. can Roswaal be saved? Can he be convinced that his mentality is wrong and that he can change? Its been 400 years... so he seems stubbornly stuck on this path.

This will be helpful: Originally there were 9 sins in history Envy, Gluttony, Greed, Pride, Sloth, Lust, Wrath, Vanity, and Acedia. Vanity and acedia were removed by pope gregory about 100 years ago because they were similar to some of the other sins. -Vanity = Excessive pride, boasting. Was removed since pride is already a sin. -Acedia = Slothful, melancholy, depressed. Was removed since sloth is already a sin. While most anime seem to focus on 7 deadly sins, re zero focuses on the original 9 deadly sins which makes it unique. It's best to acknowledge pandora and hector as witches on par with the 7 you already met, or these 2 might be even older.

I’m honestly really impressed with how well you explained everything. Well said.

To answer some of your questions: Yes, the magical release period that Roswaal went through is the same that Puck went through in Memory Snow. Unlike Puck, Roswaal had no idea what was wrong with him or even what mana was. With no way to release it, his mana built up to bursting inside him and left him frequently ill and bedridden for most of his life up to that point. His family just thought he was a weak child and basically treated him more as a burden. Then Echidna came along, stole his first kiss, taught him magic to remove the "disease" he had lived with all his life, and was the first person to truly show him understanding of his circumstances since she also had a magic release period and knew what Roswaal was going through. As for why Echidna's face isn't shown in the flashbacks, that will be revealed later in the season. As for why Roswaal speaks and dresses like Hector in the modern day, according to Re:Zero's author, it's something Roswaal does so that he never forgets the pain and powerlessness he felt on that day in the Sanctuary when he fought Hector. It's also likely that acting in a similar manner as Hector, the strongest person Roswaal has ever known, is a form of psychological defense for Roswaal to make himself feel emotionally and mentally stronger than he actually is despite his hatred for Hector. When Ryuzu said they couldn't live in peace before the Sanctuary, it's because half breeds like half elves were always treated like crap even before the Witch of Envy. Ryuzu is a half elf by the way. To explain the Od, I need to explain a bit about how magic works. When someone utilizes mana to cast a spell, they process their mana through their Gate. The Od is the container that holds a person's mana before it is passed through the Gate. The larger someone's Od, the more mana they have. Most citizens have a small Od and therefore don't have enough mana to use more than basic magic, if any at all. Characters like Roswaal, Echidna, and Emilia all have enormous Od's with Emilia canonically possessing the highest amount of raw mana in all of Re:Zero. The Od is also essentially your soul in the world of Re:Zero. So manipulating someone's Od is basically the same as touching their soul itself. So, what Ryuzu offered was her body and soul to become the core of the barrier. Roswaal is not trying to turn Emilia into a Witch. He just thinks she's overall useless and can't perform when the going gets tough. This was explained better in the novels. Basically, Roswaal only backed Emilia as a Royal Candidate because he knew from his Book of Wisdom, that getting Emilia meant getting Subaru, who his book says he must have to reach his ultimate goal. His ultimate goal will be revealed later in the season. To fill in some information, due to what is written in his copy of the Book of Wisdom, Roswaal knew about Subaru's arrival and that Subaru would be special long before Subaru appeared in the Re:Zero world. He didn't know who Subaru was or why he needed him, but he knew backing Emilia would ultimately net him Subaru as long as Subaru and Emilia met the day Subaru arrived. To this end, Roswaal purposely brought Emilia to the capital in episode one under the pretext of presenting Emilia to the Sage Council as a candidate for the throne. It was Roswaal who hired Elsa to steal Emilia's insignia because his book told him this would cause Emilia to bring Subaru into her camp and thusly Roswaal's faction. Roswaal figures out that Subaru can loop during Subaru's first week at the mansion because Subaru's parts in his book during that week kept changing. This led Roswaal to the theory that Subaru can loop. The reason Roswaal left the mansion in Subaru's final loop of Arc 2 despite never leaving before was to test if his theory about Subaru looping was correct. What Roswaal is trying to do with Subaru is to make Subaru like himself. A person that will focus soley on their one special person at the cost of everything else. He wants Subaru to focus single mindedly on Emilia like how Roswaal focuses soley on Echidna. This is because Subaru putting Emilia on the throne will lead to Roswaal achieving his own goals by proxy. In Roswaal's mind, feelings are a source of weakness and only when they are focused on one specific thing or person can feelings become something powerful. Subaru's belief is that feelings are a source of strength and are strong enough to hold onto everyone. Roswaal wants Subaru to choose Emilia over those back at the mansion and give his all for her alone. Meanwhile, Subaru says screw that, I'll save everyone I care about. Roswaal believes Subaru's goal of holding on to everything is impossible and he just needs to worry about Emilia alone. As for the rest of the stuff from 400 years ago, again, you'll learn the answers when the character's learn the answers and that isn't this season. The upside is that this should mostly be the end of the currently unanswerable questions portion of season 2. Most questions you might have from here on out should be able to be answered.

Btw, don’t worry about having questions. The series in general does leave a lot of open questions that even people who’ve caught up with the light novel don’t know. Hector and Pandora for example, we have no clue about them at all. But for clarification, melancholy was another sin that was later redacted, much like envy. So Hector is a witch. Also the theory of Roswal being part Hector is a very popular one and one I believe in. My own theory is that Echidna transferred Hectors soul into Roswal’s body. Just a theory though.
