It refers to the phase in children's' lives when they start acting out their edgy fantasies because they think its cool, and it typically happens around 8th grade. I find it funny that Tadano had his Chuunibyo phase right in 8th grade, and it ended before moving up a grade, therefore the duration of his phase was also completely "ordinary".

I think it's typical for most introverts to be more 'outside going' while in a school environment because we are under constant contact with friends and social structures who pull us out of our shell for projects or to meet up and so on. But after that we go back into our shell and now we're here haha. 'give me an intro, I go vertical!' #insideOut
