As for Akane, she isn't just acting like Ai, if you compare side by side pictures of off stage Akane and Ai at home, now that Akane has grown her hair out, she actually looks a lot like a blue haired Ai. I also, found it interesting that both Kana and Akane didn't want to lose to each other, but both thought they had lost to the other when the play was finished.

It was up to him, to channel that grief followed by catharsis, she made it real for him, in that moment. I worry about the long-term stress of this emotional sledgehammer on Aqua, but also everyone involved

All this pain and trauma that you know is there that he has held back is laid bare to the viewer and pays off the start of the emotional acting arc.. "Aqua what would you do if your mommy died?"... and the thing that brings out his best emotional performance and release for his pain in that moment is instead asking.. "What if my Mommy lived?"
