In Japan, from what I'm given to understand, once the police have a prime suspect it is almost no time at all before the person is Tried and Found Guilty. It is an extremely fast process, so if you are put on trial for anything remotely serious you are done for. Part of the point of this show is a commentary on this notion of people being judged and "sentanced" with no thought and just based on first impressions and assumptions.
