Also, I think the tiny scene of Edward with the steak is a really potent symbol. A tragedy can enclose your entire world, isolate your soul from all positive or mundane things. So setting a well-cooked meal in front of a kid suffering from the knowledge of his experiences as well as a recently discovered bereavement shows how massive a disconnect there is between the moment of loss and the continuation of living all around you. Like Winry and the apple pie - while someone else might be joyously digging into one and smiling broadly, she’s grieving never getting the chance to make one for Hughes. Capturing this in storytelling is powerful stuff!
