We already knew that Reinhard "killed" his grandma, btw, when she went to fight against the White Whale. They talked about it in the first part of the season, maybe in the first episode.

This sent his father into his drunk state which resulted in him neglecting his son even further. It does not excuse his actions but it further roots this family's tragic history. Just like Kurgen in the last episode. Theresia came back for just a momment to finally hear her husband say that he loves her it's very beautiful.

But Reinhard as the sword saint has essentially had to give up part of his humanity for the sake of being the sword saint. It’s why Wilhelm asks him if he regrets it, to which Reinhard’s lack of emotion and regret is what reinforces the idea that Reinhard is duty before all. His role as the worlds defender comes before anything, even just being a grandson to his grandfather. Reinhard is the perfect hero. But that’s all he can ever be. Even he himself describes himself as a monster who hunts monsters. For Wilhelm he can’t see Reinhard as his grandson and more so the sword saint because when he’s on duty that’s always his number 1 priority. Compared to Theresia, the previous sword saint, who despite having that title, was still just a sweet girl who didn’t want to fight, gave it up for a while and loved flowers. Reinhard has done nothing wrong. It’s just an unfortunate family dynamic.

2025-03-13 00:31:50 +0000 UTCYou're absolutely right. Its despicable how he treats his son. Even Wilhelm in a way. Heinkel blames Reinhard for what happened to his mother. Wilhelm has long forgotten that anger and has accepted Reinhard as the Sword Saint, but it looks like any chance at growing close and strengthening any family bond is gone forever now. Wilhelm at the end addressed Reinhard not as his grandson, but as the Sword Saint. Which is just so sad. They've all gone through immense pain because of Theresia's death, nothing will be the same again. The divide between all of them has grown even larger now as a result of this. This family is broken, its hard to watch. Reinhard is the perfect example of someone who seemingly has everything, but truly has nothing. He's alone. The man can have all the power and divine protection in the world.. but has nobody to share it with. Well... at least he has Felt to protect and Subaru as a friend. But nobody to call family. Damn this hurt.
