MT definitely has some of the most objectionable parts but so long as you can accept he's a protagonist with some serious flaws then you should enjoy the story. Overlord is very much a story about the bad guys and how their motivations and how they address problems are not constrained by normal morals, though I particularly like the growing political intrigues. And slime is the most cosy of them all, nearly everything in that show is aiming towards trying to create a happy universe of smiles, even if there are road bumps along the way.

I have seen other creators that have reacted to mushoku tensei and think to myself "I dont think they are the kind of people that would like this show" but they did , obviusly "complaining" to Rudeus when he did something bad (as one should) but they still were able to enjoy the show.

There is a reason why this anime is so popular even with a character like Rudeus. It is because the story is excellent.

MT is absolude masterpiece, much closer to a fantasy than an isekai in terms of writing style and world building. Yes, the MC is super cringy and I can fully understand why people hate him and give up on the show, but the entire series is SUPPOSED to be about his growth, development and redemption. It is a slow burn, but never really boring.

Personally what I look for in a show is an entertaining story. I don't care if the protagonist is the biggest piece of shit of all fiction or if it's a saint. Watching a show doesn't mean that you condone every action of the characters in the show. There are shows like Dexter or the Netflix series of Jeffrey Dahmer and all the true crime stuff on youtube and I am sure that 99.9% of the people that watches that kind of things know that killing is bad but guess what those stories are enternaining.

Overlord is good IF you can root for the bad guys. Because despite the MC doing some "good" things especially in the first season, make no mistake, he's out for himself and his allies and he's not going to let morality stand in his way. Mushoku Tensei is I think objectively the best show of the 3, BUT it's a show whos strengths are worldbuilding and character development. And the characters, especially the MC are not all good people. The MC is strait up a disgusting person in his old life for sure. Yeah he has trauma but you can't use trauma as an excuse to be horrible yourself. He has to grow to be a better person in his new life, and he does but the journey starts rough and takes a long time much like it would in real life. So while it's very good and very well done, I don't think the juice would be worth the squeeze for you. I think you'll just strait up not enjoy it and enjoyment is the whole point so just my thoughts.

But I do think you'll find it very uncomfortable during the first half of the season. If you skipped Nagatoro you'd probably want to skip this one, though it gets much worse imo. If you do decide to carry on with it, at least you are prepared. Just now that the MC is purposefully made to be a horrible person.

2025-08-14 19:58:00 +0000 UTCEven if you end up hating Mushoku Tensei's MC the actual character writing of many developments is amazing so hopefully you'll be able to get past some shaky bits early if the series does win. I also think people overblow the amount of stuff that is "unwathcable" according to them as well but everyone has different thresholds so your mileage may vary. Either way, the series is neck and neck with Re:Zero for me and MCs and some emotional stuff surrounding them was a big part of that. Any other isekais can't compare to those two series' as a result, but that's just me.

The art/animation/soundtrack and story are 10/10 tho. Slime has some issues, but way more wholesome than the other two.

The character was designed that way and you will need to pass through a few uncomfortable scenes. Now if you want to go the easy way. I think that Tensura "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime" is going to be the safest option for you
