So seeing him rise above, and meet the bare minimum of a decent person by modern standards is actually a huge achievement from where he started, and how little social pressure there is for him to improve. It's overwhelmingly his internal desire to be better, rather than an external one that causes his improvement.

Rudy helping Eris out at her birthday wasn't because he was getting paid, and wasn't because he thought he would get anything out of it, it was simply because he saw someone he cared about struggling and wanted to help. This is why, despite all the problematic things he does, there is a core of a good person in there. And so, his growth over the series is shown by him getting better control of himself, and learning the lessons he failed to learn the first time.
