2025-10-23 21:00:15 +0000 UTCthe key difference here between mance kneeling and not is that there's *nothing* stopping the free folk from joining stannis on his own volition. however, mance kneeling would sort of destroy the entire point of being called the "free folk". mance never demanded the loyalty of the tribes or clans or even people. they follow him because they can. joining stannis on the other hand would ascribe to westerosi sense of rules and free folks "leaving" and whatnot would be seen as desertion. getting their own land would still be adhering to a set of rules. joining stannis in other words would be voluntarily giving up their freedom. I think Mance choosing to not kneel in part, is because he doesn't believe he has the *right* to make that decision to begin with
