i wake up to the phone ringing on my bedside. whenever you call me late, i usually know exactly what that means. the moment i hear your voice on the other end, i know what you need. you just woke up from another nightmare. all i can think is i should’ve stayed with you tonight. you knew i had work in the morning, so you insisted that i not stay over but i shouldn't have listened. i’m already rolling out of bed, already searching for clothes, already telling you to hold tight. literally just five minutes, that’s all i need, and i'll be on my way over. it doesn’t matter how late it is. if you need me, then i'll be there to take care of you. i’ll be at your door before you know it, and once i’m there, we’ll get you back to sleep the right way. i show up just like i said i would. the second the door opens, there you are, already falling into me, exhausted. as soon as you see me, you fall into my arms as i wrap you tightly into my chest. in a single motion, i lift you, cradling you as i swing the door shut. you melt into me as i bring you back to bed, where you belong. before i can even start undressing, you’re already reaching for me. i climb in beside you, your arms draped around me, our legs intertwined, your face buried into me. now you're finally ready to fall back to sleep, or so i thought. as we get more snuggly, i can tell you’re wired from waiting for me to come over. you need an outlet for all this newly found energy, and the look in your eye tells me you have ideas. afterwards, you finally fall asleep. honestly, there's nothing better than having you right here beside me. if you wake up again tonight, you won't need to call. this time, you can just reach out, feel me there, and know that everything's okay, know that you're safe. i'm really glad i came over tonight. it's just really nice being here with you, in the same place, in the same bed, sleeping together.
