Brighid Ladair rushed up the scenic trail to Blossomshade Cliff with a burning vigour. The vibrant Saffronia trees around her glowed in the early morning sun, shedding a few of their leaves in the gentle breeze. Her heart was ablaze, fueling her flaming body twofold. Each step she took seared the ground beneath her, and each of her excited breaths fanned the flame within. Her tears evaporated away before they could run down her rosy cheeks.
Atop the hill stood her wife, serenely gazing out over the Urayan titan’s awe-inspiring landscape with her arms held behind her back. Morag was wearing an uncharacteristically informal light grey sweater and black leggings. After all, she was no longer Special Inquisitor of Mor Ardain - Morag's former nation no longer even existed after the Agnian Unification of Alrest.
“Morag! Oh Morag darling, it finally happened!”
Turning to see her partner arriving by her side, Morag's eyes widened as she pressed a hand to her gaping mouth.
"Truly!?"
"Yes! Yes it's true!" Brighid cried, holding up a small device displaying two blue lines. "Darling, I'm pregnant!"
Choking on a breathless laugh, Morag lunged forward and wrapped her arms over Brighid's shoulders. Brighid returned the hug, slid her arms down so she could lift her beloved up, then held her in a bridal carry.
"We're soon-to-be parents! Woohoo!"
Morag cheered as Brighid twirled on the spot, spinning her lover around in her loving grasp.
Morag had had an incredibly difficult time dropping her stiff, formal conduct - she had been raised from birth to act in a manner becoming of Ardainian royalty, after all. But the sheer joy bursting within her bypassed the years of behavioural conditioning and rose to the surface. For the first time in her life, Morag allowed herself the freedom to release a series of wild howls.
"Ahahahaaa, wooooo!"
“We’re going to be mothers together! Morag, we’re going to be mums!”
Brighid slowed to a halt and set Morag back on her feet. They held onto each other for balance after their dizzying celebration, which quickly turned into another joyous embrace.
"By the Architect, I love you Brighid!"
"Oh Morag, I love you too!"
After they finished weeping tears of joy in each other’s arms, the lesbian wives pulled back and interlocked their fingers.
Morag smiled unreservedly, staring at her lover's face.
Brighid opened her teary eyes to return the gesture. She could see perfectly well with her eyes closed, but the flaming blade loved the intimate feeling of gazing into her wife's eyes. Morag was not only the only person she enjoyed making eye contact with, but the only person she was even comfy making eye contact with.
Inching closer to each other’s faces, the pair whispered “I-” almost simultaneously, but both stopped to let the other continue.
“Hee hee, you first,” Brighid giggled.
“I’m the luckiest person in Alrest to be your wife, my love~”
“You took the words right out of my mouth~”
Brighid gently closed her eyes again as she leaned in and placed her lips on her driver’s. Morag in turn squeezed hers shut as a new wave of tears began to fall down her face.
As they broke off their kiss, a series of heavy stomps in the distance became audible, catching their attention. Looking back towards Fonsa Myma, they saw a colourful blur racing towards them.
It was none other than Poppi who had tracked down the Flamebringers to the scenic locale.
“Brighiiiid!” Poppi called just as she was about to arrive. “Is Brighid alright!? Poppi saw Brighid race out of Folmarie Inn with tears in eyes! Poppi get very worried and rush after Brighid, but lose sight in morning crowds!”
Poppi ran in place and flung her mechanical arms away from her body so she could flail them up and down. The confusion and worry on her face doubled when she saw Morag weeping too.
“Oh Poppi… Everything’s fine, don’t worry. These are happy tears!” Brighid assured.
“It’s true, Brighid just brought the best news I’ve ever received!”
Poppi slowed to a halt and calmed her tense nerves, relieved her friends were safe.
“Phew! Poppi really worried there for a sec. It very strange for Morag to act like this, but Poppi glad friends are happy!”
A genuine grin formed on her artificial face.
“Ha ha, I have lost my composure, haven’t I?” Morag chuckled. “But who can blame me? Poppi, Brighid and I… W-we…” She was suddenly too choked up to finish her sentence.
“We’re going to be mothers!” Brighid croaked, verklempt herself.
Poppi gasped as her eyes widened and her jaw fell. She pointed forward, once again shaking her arm up and down.
“Mamapons! Brighid!? And Morag!? Mamapons!?”
“Hee hee, yes, Poppi! I’m pregnant! We’ll be Momapons like Nia, Pyra, and Mythra!”
“More mamapons! And more babies! Poppi will have even more friends!” Poppi shouted. As she began to run around, Poppi’s arms extended as if they were wings that could carry her away. “Whee!”
“We’d best return to the inn. The others are probably wondering where we’ve gotten off to.” Morag said.
The pair turned to make their way back to Fonsa Myma. Poppi buzzed around them gleefully as Morag and Brighid took their time, hand in hand.
“The ones who are awake, that is.”
“Ah, of course. So Rex, Dromarch, and Turters then.”
Brighid giggled. “You’ll never believe it, but Mythra was up when I ran out as well.”
“Oh get out!” Morag rebutted, making good use of the informality training she’d been getting from Nia and Zeke.
“I’m serious! She was out on the balcony singing to little Addam, Corinne, and Mio. I saw her there just before I tested.”
“Hmmmmm…” Morag gazed forward longingly.
“Hm?”
“That could be us. That will be us! I… Don’t laugh, but… I’d like to try that. Singing to our children.”
“Oh darling, that’s so sweet! I would never laugh at that.”
Brighid walked closer to her wife, reached her free hand over, and gently grabbed Morag’s arm.
“You’ll be a wonderful mum, dear. There’s nobody I’d rather raise our children with. I love you dearly.” Brighid’s eyes watered yet again.
Morag placed her free hand over the one Brighid had just placed on her arm.
“I love you too, Brighid.” Morag choked up again. “I t-told you, didn’t I? I knew we’d succeed eventually. I just-” She sniffled. “I just knew it in my heart. Stranger things have happened than a trans woman getting her blade wife pregnant, eh? I’m pretty sure we’ve even been involved in a few of them ourselves!”
“Like going to space!” Brighid smiled.
“Like going to space.” Morag agreed.
Together, Morag and Brighid walked towards their future as parents, hand in hand.
