The butterfly on Basil's face is a symbol for ADHD. Abe has the infinity which represents autism.
So one thing I've been dealing with recently is getting an adult diagnosis for ADHD. ADHD, or Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, is something that has really caused me a lot of struggle in my life. Worrying about forgetting things, losing track of my actions half way through, irritability, being trapped in day dreams, annoying people by talking too much and emphasizing myself more than I should etc. As such, there's also a possibility that while testing I may be diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder).
I've always thought of myself as an extrovert grappling with anxiety and this may just be a manifestation of ADHD. That core feeling is what inspired Basil as a character. Likewise, Abe is based on people I know with ASD who tend to retreat inwards and operate by routine. Upon reflection, I think the characters of Spotting Basil are neurodivergent. This was not something I intended when putting pen to paper, but the people around me who inspired the characters as well as my own neurodivergence informed them.
While waiting on my diagnosis it gave me great comfort to think of my characters this way. I hope this image can give a few of you some comfort too.
