The Horned Owl Sign Tutorial

So I thought I'd do a little "tutorial" of how I made the horned owl sign. I wanted to reuse the sign I used in my Kiki video for something since it was sitting around! So I drew up this sign concept of an owl logo. I used aluminum foil to create the shapes of the horns and the nose. Also a bit of jewelry wire was used to stabilize the horns on the sign.

Next I used sculpey to flesh it out and add details.

Long rolls of sculpey was used to create the lettering. This was by far the toughest and most frustrating part! Then I positioned everything and glued it down with hot glue. I used a hair dryer to make some parts bendy enough to position. I had a couple of breaks which were fixed pretty easily with super glue!

After that I made a bunch of little feathers to glue down and cover up my wire.

Phew! Tough part over, now to paint! I first primed with several layers of Plasti Dip.

I had a vague idea of what colors I wanted. Though I ended up changing the colors. I started more yellow and black, and ended more brown and orange. I also changed the eye style to something a little more vintage and classic. :) I used acrylic paints and used metallic paints to add shininess to the feathers and eyes.

And finally.....

Very cool! I love seeing how something this eye-catching was put together, great work on the color choices and especially all the sculpted feathers and words, I bet that took some time.

I was worried for a minute there that real owls were harmed during the production of this movie

I was wondering if you also made all the labels (mead, shampoo, etc.) since they match the sign.
