"Love triangle"? What you described sounded more like a threesome... 😉

2024-05-03 19:05:23 +0000 UTCContact seems to have a pretty loyal nerdy fanbase. Which isn’t surprising considering that it is based on a Carl Sagan novel. I too adore Carl’s work, and the pure joy he showed when sharing knowledge with his audience. The movie Contact though is what I would describe as a textbook-example of a “flawed masterpiece”. Great plot, great cast, great music (as you pointed out)… but ridiculously two-dimensional characters and some really poor editing choices, resulting in a very unevenly paced movie. Throughout his career Carl Sagan has always been at odds with religious and superstitious belief systems. Thus the movie centres on resolving the struggle between faith and scientific evidence, rather than focusing on what - opinion of me, the space buff - the movie should really be about: the search of intelligent life outside our tiny rock called Earth. It’s overall an okay movie, but when it comes to late 90s hard sci-Fi, I still think that you’ll find Gattaca much more gripping.

2024-04-28 08:37:55 +0000 UTCThe eyes were all over the place on this one! If Whimsory has to stop doing TikTok I recommend watching/making some silent movies because you've got the expressive face to appreciate them! [What could Lillian Gish have done with social media and facial editing software? The mind boggles...] Movie connections for future watches: Jodie Foster: She's done other great movies, but any critic would say SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is one of those "films to watch before you die." Jake Busey: I forgot he was in this! But his best is STARSHIP TROOPERS, a movie that's perfect for the channel for several reasons (gross-out effects, a rich backstory behind the filmmaking). John Hurt: For spoiler-y reasons I can't say, because he spoofs his ALIEN appearance. I'm sure Patreon people know which movie I mean though. :)

2024-04-26 01:24:07 +0000 UTCthe "noise" in the beginning of the movie represent the noise that Earth sends out into space. The "search for aliens" is shown as listening using radio telescopes. Okay so... radio frequencies travel at the speed of light through space. The nearest star is pretty far away, it takes over 4 years to receive a signal from there. So this also means that the signals we send out will take 4 years to get there (4 Years Later - time skip in the movie). The "noise" coming form Earth spreads out in a sphere and 50 years ago the stars that are 50 years away will be hearing "music" from 50 years ago... In the beginning of the movie that's why we're hearing older and older music as we travel further away from Earth. And then a broadcast from the 1936 Olympics was sent back to Earth, intriguing! Just how far away are these aliens? Okay now you have the basis for radio astronomy 😊

2024-04-25 23:35:16 +0000 UTCGood spot on Tom Skerritt (Drumlin) being in Alien. John Hurt (Hadden) was also in Alien, though he is sporting something of a different look here.

2024-04-25 18:01:08 +0000 UTCJodi Foster is a good actor, she did the latest season of "True Detective" show and it is quality in part because of her work. Carl Sagan decades ago hosted a great tv show called "Cosmos" discussing various things under that general subject.

2024-04-25 11:42:04 +0000 UTCThat face you made before the outro *chef's kiss*. And not to add to your "weird feelings" about how big the world is but if you start thinking about the vastness of space and how much is out there, it's many many orders of magnitude "bigger" than our little, awesome planet :P (sorry) Absolutely loved this reaction, thank you!
