"National Treasure" (2004)

It doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere. I can only find it on YT. I'm sure that blu-ray has a MUCH better picture. 👍 Sadly, that's the way it actually was for black people back then. I lived in Pensacola in the 60's and I remember when I would go with my mom to drop off our maid Cassie. As a kid I just assumed everyone lived in a nice house like mine. So it was kind of a shock to see Cassie living in a crappy old shack. I never witnessed anyone being mean to black people, but they were definitely underpaid. My dad was just starting out though, with a family and a mortgage, so he couldn't afford to pay her much. Or hire her for more than a few hours a week. She was grateful for what work she could get. In the movie "The Help", they showed some asinine woman forbidding her maid from using their bathroom back then. We were NEVER like that. Cassie was always welcome to use the bathroom, and sit down with us to eat lunch. I can't speak for all southern towns, but being kind and considerate was a pretty high priority in ours.

"Conrack" is not totally forgotten. I actually have a copy on blu-ray.

Yeah, making speeches in class was always stressful. Sometimes the teachers were pretty insensitive about the stressful situations they put students in. I remember when the gym teacher in high school would line us up to form teams. He would pick 2 captains and let the captains choose, one by one, who they wanted on their team. I felt SO bad for the kids who were picked last. That made them feel so inadequate. When the gym teacher picked me as one of the captains for flag football, I intentionally picked the ones who were usually left out. The jock captain, true to form, picked all of his fellow jocks. The teacher asked me, "Are you sure you wanna stick with these picks?" I knew we would lose, but we didn't lose by much. After that, the teacher realized what I was trying to do, so he kept picking me as a captain. We made it to the final 2 out of 8 teams in volleyball. And won a basketball game. That wasn't my best sport, but I got hot at one point and sank 3 baskets in a row. The captain of the jock team got frustrated and yelled at his teammates, "COVER that guy, he's GOOD." 😂💪 That was my real life "Revenge of the Nerds" moment. Check out that movie someday, it's funny. 😋

Wow, I liked Kurtwood Smith a LOT better as a dad on "That 70's Show". He was great as a villain in "Robocop" too! I feel the same way about poetry and Shakespeare being a bit overrated. They are more palatable when referenced in movies like this. That Herrick poem was also recited by Jon Voight in "Conrack". Great forgotten movie about an inspiring real life teacher. One of John Williams earliest scores. I also loved the way the prog rock band RUSH incorporated elements of the famous Coleridge poem "Kubla Khan" into their epic song "Xanadu". That one is recited by Martin Sheen in "Sweet Hostage". But his character gets a little too carried away in his zeal to share his love of that poem with Linda Blair. Watch that movie to see what I mean. 😅
