Sit down and relax, i'm about to go deep into how drawing enormous asses work.
Do note that i first tried to recreate them visually (copying the reference) and then i ended up tracing and fixing some proportions to be able to segment the butts correctly.
After some thought, i divided them into 5 visual categories that could be easily understood.
I'm going to explain one specifically.
And it's the most fun to tinker with -
π’ Secondary Fat Fold
This is basically all excess fat. When the ass so fat it has fat in it's fat. You see, legs can be divided into five (even six) parts, those being:
1. Hip structure 2. Butt 3. Thigh 4. Knee 5. Calves 6. Feet structure
This excess fat can technically be found anywhere What makes it fun though, is that there's no limit. Excess fat can be stretched out, flattened out, and can even tolerate absurds amount of cellulite - and still be perceived as a nice, round shape.
The Secondary Fat Fold color in my studies means that:
even a bit of extra pudge can be doubled or even tripled in size.
That's how you end up with ladies that require a pair of chairs to seat.
Now, talking about the lower part of the thighs - where fat stacks thanks to gravitty, you just have to remember that the Joints don't dissapear, they just get swallowed by fat pillows around them.
Cellulite
Let's jump right into this amazing visual cue.
Part of the reason i didn't study this sooner is because i was afraid of drawing cellulite. I feel like it's not for everyone and that it can mess up stylized drawings.
Though, i love it now. Cellulite can be drawn almost in a random way. You do need to follow the roundness of the shape to deliver volume. Imagining craters on a spherical surface works like a charm.
The problem comes when gravitty affects that spherical surface.
In that case, imagine those craters becoming folds and stacking into each other whenever you rotate that sphere.
The key to nailing down Cellulite, even if your notion of volume isn't accurate, is to understand that the round shape breaks down into folds - and that some of those folds directly receive light, creating that wave effect.
Do you like cellulite? Would you rather see more artist embrace it on their art?
I'm considering on developing a brush + some assets to automatically draw cellulite... i think i'll give it a go next month to speed up my process.
That's pretty much it for now, thank you for reading my thesis! :D
