I think the word US here has a double meaning. The Tethered are US, but it also the U-S, as in the United States. What I think Peele is trying to say here is that the surface people have everything but worry about stupid stuff, material objects, technology, and generally don't appreciate everything that they have. The bible verse Jeremiah 11:11 is everywhere in this film, and that bible verse is basically god telling the Jews he won't protect them because they have been living poorly and ignoring his laws. I don't think Peele is especially religious but pointing out that people in the United States are materialistic and generally don't take care of each other, and things like "Hands Across America" are more performative than actually helping those in need. Basically, the monsters are US.
