Okay, we need to talk about the guy who just punched Leviathan to death. Who is he? Where did he come from? And, seriously, why hasn’t anyone ever heard of him before now?

Pretty sure no one has a clue, but I’ve been glued to every news feed since Brockton Bay got hit. Everyone’s freaking out. I mean, Leviathan’s dead. DEAD. That’s never happened before. Even Scion never managed it.

It doesn’t make sense. Killing an Endbringer? I’m not even sure what that means. Did anyone get footage of it? There’s a ton of rumours, but no one’s posted solid proof.

►CynicalSam

Replied on June 16th, 2011:

@ BrokenSky: Of course there’s no civilian footage. Leviathan’s storm wrecked most of the city’s infrastructure. Anyone who was close enough to see it was probably busy trying not to drown.

I’ve been sifting through PHO all morning, and all I’ve found are eyewitness accounts. Some are… well, let’s just say exaggerated. People are calling him a god. Others think he’s some kind of weapon TinkerTech experiment gone rogue. Take everything with a grain of salt until we get official statements.

►NyxShadow

Replied on June 16th, 2011:

@ Wyrmtongue: You’re acting like this isn’t huge. A cape we’ve never heard of shows up, rescues people, and defeats an Endbringer. That’s not just news. That’s history. If he’s real, if this isn’t some weird prank or misunderstanding, he’s going to change everything.

I was in Brockton Bay. I saw him. He’s not like anyone else—he just flew in and started saving people. Didn’t even seem phased by Leviathan until he went straight for the kill. No hesitation.

I’m skeptical. Without footage, we’re relying on word of mouth. Remember how people exaggerate during disasters. I’ll wait for official confirmation.

I’ve got a friend in the PRT who says the Protectorate is scrambling. They don’t know what to do with him. Apparently, he’s not registered anywhere, not even in other countries. Guy’s an enigma.

The fact that someone did the impossible is terrifying. What kind of power does Superman have to kill an Endbringer? Is he even human?

►books_and_beans (At Ground Zero: Brockton Bay)

Replied on June 16th, 2011:

Human or not, he’s a hero. I don’t care where he came from. Brockton Bay owes him everything.

HpFlylessPretentious: Hey Vic, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something.

HpFlylessPretentious: It’s about Amy.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: is everything okay with her?

HpFlylessPretentious: I’ve tried approaching her gently, but she’s been… avoiding me. I know she’s scared, frustrated, and probably dealing with a lot of guilt that I don’t think she’s ready to admit yet. The thing is, I’m trying to walk that fine line of offering help without pushing too hard, but at some point, I think she’s going to need someone who’s going to be there for her when everything starts falling apart.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: why is she avoiding you?

HpFlylessPretentious: It’s complicated. I think she’s jealous of me. Or maybe she resents me. I’m not sure. I’ve been careful not to push, but every time I try to bring things up, she shuts down or pushes me away.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: jealous? Of what?

HpFlylessPretentious: Of you, mostly. I mean, it’s not like she’s said it outright, but I can feel it. She’s got all this self-loathing bottled up, and when she looks at me, it’s like I’m a reminder of what she thinks she’ll never have. And with you… it’s complicated between you two.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: yeah, no kidding. She’s always been weird about me dating you, even when Im just happy. She never says it, but its like she doesnt think she deserves to feel that way.

HpFlylessPretentious: Exactly. She feels trapped in her own head. And I don’t know how to get through to her.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: so what do you want me to do?

Okay, so this is getting insane. There's this new movement called The Church of Superman that started out in Brockton Bay, just after the battle against Leviathan. They actually worship Superman, and I don't mean hero-worship—they literally believe he is a divine being sent to Earth to bring about salvation.

I thought it was just some group doing the usual cape fandom stuff, like painting murals or whatever. But worship? That's a whole other level.

I saw one of their rallies last week in Brockton Bay. They’re handing out pamphlets, with a stylised Superman’s "S" symbol superimposed with a cross and a halo. It’s... kinda freaky? People were weeping in the streets, chanting "In His Light, We Are Saved." Looked like a mix of a church service and a political rally.

►Wingedmurasaki

This is the last thing we need right now. The lower districts look like war zones, and some areas are just… abandoned. No one’s even trying to clean up anymore. The Protectorate's gone to crap, and so have the Wards. It feels like no one’s in charge. It’s chaos.

►Cokevanillazero

Replied on July 10th, 2011:

@ wingedmurasaki: I wouldn’t say it’s total chaos. The Undersiders are still active, right? I’m not saying they’re heroes or anything, but they’ve been stepping up since the attack. They’ve taken control of parts of the city, offering protection in exchange for favors. In a way, they’re filling the void the Protectorate left behind.

►GunNNife

Replied on July 10th, 2011:

@ cokevanillazero: Yeah, stepping up is one way to put it. If you can call what they do ‘helping.’ I’ve heard rumors about extortion and the Undersiders running protection rackets in some areas. They might not be outright bad, but it’s not like they’re doing this out of the kindness of their hearts.

►BW_Bird

Replied on July 10th, 2011:

But, here's a question: Isn't this exactly what people have been doing for centuries? Seeking out a symbol of hope, someone to look up to when the world feels too dark? Superman's not the first "god" people have created to fill that gap.

►Ordinaryundone

Replied on July 10th, 2011:

That’s the thing. Isn’t Superman a new cape, even if he’s uber-powerful? He’s a symbol, sure, but deification? That’s a slippery slope. I feel for him. How do you even respond to this?

►JustAGamerA

Replied on July 10th, 2011:

Oh great, now we have to deal with this shit on top of everything else. You know this is going to attract the crazies, the zealots, and the people looking to manipulate it. It’ll be just like the cult of the fallen, only with a flying, laser-eyed cape in the mix.

►Miss Mercury (Protectorate Employee)

Replied on July 10th, 2011:

@ cokevanillazero: Speaking as someone in the thick of it, I can tell you that the situation is far more complicated than some would like to admit. The Undersiders have carved out territory and are offering protection in exchange for favors, sure, but at what cost? Extortion, intimidation, and a complete disregard for any law or oversight.

Yes, the PRT has had its own issues in the wake of the attack, but we’re still working to restore order and stability through systems that hold everyone accountable, not just the strongest or most willing to use fear as a tool.

►MrApophenia

Replied on July 10th, 2011:

But… from what I hear, Superman does embody everything that’s good. So maybe the cult's not entirely bad? I don’t know. This just feels like humanity needs something to believe in, and Superman is the closest thing we have to perfection. I want to believe in him too.

HpFlylessPretentious: Just… keep an eye on her, Vic. You know her better than I do. If she shuts me out completely, I’m hoping she’ll turn to you instead.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: she doesnt talk to me about this stuff, Dean. She never has.

HpFlylessPretentious: Maybe not. But if it gets worse, she’ll need someone. I’d rather it be you than nobody at all.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: …you really care about her, dont you?

HpFlylessPretentious: I do. She’s a good person, Vic, even if she doesn’t believe it.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: ill try. But shes always been stubborn.

HpFlylessPretentious: I know. I just don’t want her to feel like she’s alone in this.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: same. Thanks for telling me, Dean.

HpFlylessPretentious: Of course. Let me know if she ever opens up to you.

Point_Me_@_The_Sky: i will. Stay safe out there, okay?

HpFlylessPretentious: You too, Vic. Always.
