In defense of the social worker, it's important to remember that the questions are not just about learning about the couple's history but also helping to determine what children to pair them with. There aren't always newborn babies available so they have to navigate circumstances on both sides (potential parents & kids). That's why they try to create profiles that are as extensive as possible. I can tell you from experience that you are not disqualified from being an adoptive parent just because you come from an abusive home (at least not in the US) but they do like to know how you dealt with that to know how you might handle a child with the same background.

It will be interesting to see whether the devil was a hallucination he experienced or just a representation for the audience to understand his past trauma.

Some questions I remember were about our sex life, our childhoods, our political and religious views, etc. Maybe not as invasive as face-to-face interviews, but still weirded us out. We also had questions about what we would do if we found out the fetus had Down's Syndrome or other diagnoses, if we'd abort, etc. I remember it feeling like a test we had to pass to be allowed to become parents...
