“What kind of surprise party is this?” Gwen asked Felicia as they arrived on Earth-Peter, as Gwen thought of it—the one where Peter was alive and not black. And single.

Felicia—the goggles Felicia, who seemed to have a thing for universes where Peter was alive and not black and an adult—looked at her innocently. “What do you mean? It’s a birthday party. You, me, and Mary Jane give him lots of cake.”

She referred to the Mary Jane of Earth-Peter, who Gwen quite liked and slightly wanted to open-mouth kiss. “See, that’s just it, cake, there’s a bit of a double meaning…”

“What are you getting at here?”

“Just that we’re not going to jump out of a giant cake in bikinis or anything.”

“Of course now. It would be a very tight fit. Neither of you are that flexible.”

“Good… wait, wha-hey?”

They’d reached the door to Peter’s apartment, privacy concerns having compelled them to arrive only in the hallway outside the apartment and not inside.

“Mary Jane should be here already,” Felicia said, trying the doorknob. “If she’s not, I can definitely pick this lock.”

“I’m just saying,” Gwen continued. “Peter’s single here, so… and Mary Jane is single, too.”

Felicia paused with her foot in the door. “So you think they’re going to get together?”

“So I think you may be going to seduce one of them. Or both of them.”

“Feeling left out?” Felicia teased, and threw the door open.

The lights were off, or so it appeared in the microsecond before the darkness rushed out and yanked them inside.
