It weirds me out a bit when fandom says that she's a black woman and (I think) darkens old comics of hers for icons and such, since she's usually portrayed as an alien with an inhuman skin coloring in line with Gamora or any given Orion (just able to pass as human since she resembles a very tanned person; she worked as a model in the then-contemporary eighties, and I think it's obvious Perez and Wolfman were riffing on the beach babes of the time).
Maybe I'm just used to the old NTT books, where she was colored a few shades darker than Dick and Donna, but nowhere near Cyborg. At a stretch you could say the closest she comes to an Earth minority would be Pacific Islanders--since she comes from a balmy tropical world--but God, am I ruing DC finally casting someone as Kory and then her getting hate because she's white. As if anyone cared when an Afro-Cuban woman was cast as Gamora. C'mon...

My first exposure to Starfire was the cartoon, not the comics, so needless to say it was quite jarring (Not to mention oddly titillating) to discover the more full-figured original version of Kory some years later. But yeah, I never made interpreted any racial connotations towards Starfire; I always thought she was just an orange space chick. But I don't feel you're exaggerating; if there can be think-pieces made over Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, a casting announcement for Starfire isn't out of the realm of plausibility (With that said, if they were to choose to draw from the show for inspiration, I think Saoirse Ronan would be a good choice. I have no clue who could play the buxom, Amazonian version).

2017-05-18 01:16:55 +0000 UTCWell, I see her as more gold than bronze, but agree on the height (six feet even), which isn't quite tall enough to make my mental list of "DAMN tall" heroines/villainesses (weirdly, asides from Barda, She-Hulk and Red She-Hulk, the said list is all redheads)
