Roy rubbed at his eyes. He was feeling lightheaded, his vision blurred, something off in his finely tuned senses ever since he’d gotten back from Talia’s. Maybe it was a good thing Oracle had benched him. He could probably use a nap, but no, he felt too keyed up for that. Maybe a cold shower, or a hot bath, or a bite to eat. There was no reason for him to stay in Oracle’s Delphi room, waiting for them to call. Barbara had Dinah and Helena with her, and all three of them could handle themselves. He just felt so damn protective. Barbara was in a wheelchair and Helena was, well, something to him, and Dinah was something else—she was Dinah.

He rubbed at his face again. God, what was wrong with him? He had to do something to work the kinks out or by the time they did need to call him into action, he’d be a nervous wreck.

“Mr. Arsenal?”

“What?” Roy snapped, spinning around to see Misfit standing there. God, did she look cute. A yellow dress covering her curves to make her innocent as a nun, Mary Jane shoes with knee high socks. She’d put her hair up in pigtails tied with yellow ribbons. But what really made the grade was how self-conscious she looked wearing them—like a stripper dressed as a Catholic schoolgirl before her act started. Probably Barbara’s idea of a joke, giving her the clothes of a sixth-grader to wear while she gave her costume a wash…

What was he thinking? She was young enough to be his… well, not that young. But definitely as young as any babysitter Lian had ever had.

“Sorry,” Roy said, lowering his voice. “I didn’t mean to yell. I’m just a little on edge. What can I do for you?”

Misfit bit her lip. Roy guessed his ogre act had made her want to run and hide, but now she was too put on the spot not to say something. “Is it true you’re a father?”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. I have a little girl. She’s eight.”

“Oh,” Misfit said in a ginger voice. “So you’re married?”

“No, no, God no. It’s complicated. Her mother’s not in the picture.”

“Divorce?”

“Nuclear explosion,” Roy said.
