Always a bit of challenge
Added 2019-08-02 15:12:23 +0000 UTCThinking of something to post while I wait for everyone to finalize their pledges. So I'd like to talk about this idea I had for a book. Now, obviously, Dating Catwoman is a very popular trope, usually because of the love rack. The hero and the villainess want to be together because it's so wrong, but they can't because it's so wrong.
But... what if they did? What if just once, Batman said screw Gotham City, I'm gonna take Catwoman and jet? Or Spider-Man said enough with great responsibility, Black Cat is DTF? And that got me thinking about 1. what would drive your average superhero to jettison his life and run off? (my conclusion might be a bit controversial, but like I shy from that) 2. wouldn't this all make a great backdrop for a good old-fashioned heist? You've got the romance of S&M-influenced cat burglars and the intrigue of a crime story in a superhero universe. It'd be like To Catch A Thief, but in the MCU, and with spanking! (I think I just sold the film rights to Brian De Palma by typing that)
Happily, I've been wanting to write a Black Cat comic for a while--it'd be basically Leverage in the Marvel Universe, with Felicia, a random Spider-Man clone, and four semi-reformed C-list supervillains robbing from the many rich assholes in 616. So for some reason I've got a fat stack of research material and plotbunnies there.
So that's definitely on the burner somewhere. The main issue is structural. Since it isn't a fanfic, I have to
1. Establish a plucky superhero.
2. Establish a slinky cat burglar.
3. Establish their usual routine and UST.
4. BREAK WITH the established routine (Not Spider-Man catches Not Felicia pulling an art heist, but this time, the night ends with her being bent over a display case)
5. FINALLY start the plot with them recruiting a team of crooks, planning a heist, etc.
So that's a big ask. But if I can pull off Fifty Shades of Grey meets Spider-Man, that must be worth something. Maybe an Emmy.
