“You were wonderful, my dear leader,” Ororo whispered, doling out praise as if Scott needed further proof that she had enjoyed herself. “I don’t know whether to wish that you’ve bred me… or that you haven’t and we may try again.”
Scott smiled weakly, stepped away from Ororo, and began rearranging his clothes to their usual pristine order. “We can try that whenever you want, Ro—you know I’d do anything for a teammate.”
Ororo grinned, amused at the idea. “And is Emma not jealous enough already?”
“Jealousy is good for her. It gives her something to be a little bitchy about. Besides, if she thought no one else wanted to fight with her over me, she wouldn’t have any fun. I’ve never seen her happier than when Jean came back.”
“Perhaps because she knew by then that, hard as it might be to juggle both her and Jean, you didn’t have it in you to stop loving her.”
Scott ducked his head, hiding a wider smile at Ororo’s perceptiveness. “Let me guess: don’t tell her you said that?”
“As you said. She’s happiest when she has something to be bitchy about. I wouldn’t deprive her of a rival no matter how much I admire her.”
“She still has Jean.”
“Emma and Jean have been enemies for so long that they enjoy sparring with each other. And when you get that much pleasure out of someone else, it can’t be said you hate them.”
“You really think so?”
Ororo shrugged indolently. “There are men who call me goddess. If I could sort out some of the dynamics around the mansion, I would give myself that name.”
