Raised By Wolves update

Walking amongst the group, Betsy advised the girls on how they were doing. She kept moving, only stopping when she came to Jubilee. Then she knelt down and whispered “I want you to stay after the others leave. There’s something I’d like to talk to you about.”

A flash of apprehension appeared in Jubilee’s eyes, but it was gone just as quickly. Betsy wondered if it was just nerves on the girl’s part; why would she be frightened at the prospect of talking to me?

Jubilee nodded her head. “Okay,” she muttered quickly.

At the end of the hour, Betsy let the girls leave and started cleaning up what they’d been working with. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched Monet. Noting how she appeared to be waiting for Jubilee to come along with those who were leaving. When she didn’t, Monet approached Jubilee and, her eyes quickly brushing over Betsy, crouched down and whispered something to Jubilee, whose face went white.

Almond eyes slid to Betsy, as though reassuring herself she was there. It was like Jubilee might need her help.

Alright, this is getting to be too much. I think it’s about time I know what’s really going on here.

Marching quickly to the two girls, she fixed her eyes on Monet and was shocked by how her gaze was returned. Monet’s expression was one of almost derisive contempt. Betsy’s spine stiffened with indignation. She drew herself up and assumed her sternest voice.

“Why aren’t you headed for the lake with everyone else, Ms. St. Croix?” she asked. “They’ll be waiting for you to start swimming class.”

“I already know how to swim,” Monet replied tersely, her eyes still boldly meeting Betsy’s.

“Then why don’t you go down to the lake and offer the teacher your help?” Betsy said firmly. “I’m sure she’d appreciate your assistance.”

“I’m waiting for Jubilee.”

“I asked Jubilee to stay behind and help me with something,” Betsy told her. “I didn’t ask that of you. So since there’s no need for you to be here, you should get to the lake.”

Once again Betsy felt like she was being mocked by the look in Monet’s eyes, but she refused to back down, and after a moment Monet straightened up to her full height—though she did as willfully, as lacking in any sign of submission, as she could.

“Alright, I’ll go. But only because of the company around here. It’s boring.”
