The final season of our crystal gems and the secluded beach city. This season was tremendous in the way that they accumulated elements of rose, Steven, the city folk, and the home world all into worthwhile and unforgettable emotional punches with themes of change, perfectionism, resentment, and identity. From the incredible Lars redemption and intergalactic venture with other hidden gems, to the anger and distance between Connie and Steven, Lapis’ continued running from triggers, Sadie leaving her comfort, the city itself going under new management, the earth shattering reveal of Rose/Pink Diamond and it throwing the entire cast into disarray and relief, to a wedding that celebrates fusions, and a final mission where we battle the utopia and perfectionism and close minded culture that White Diamond instilled into homeworld, all of these developments showcased the brilliant writing and emotional paramounts at its highest degree.

There are a multitude of stand out episode runs, messages, and pay offs that make this season top tier. The feelings and strains are heartfelt and honest, the change and acceptance within everyone is astounding, the reveals and shedding off is shocking, and the care to tackle and finish everyone’s storyline is deserved. While I would have preferred to understand White Diamond’s past and ideology a bit more to really make me empathize with her whether that is more of a history lesson or inclusions throughout the entire series, it still made her reflecting on her own nature and ways as a solid solution. Some drops every now and then but every episode was moving towards the finish line and understanding our character’s headspace. With some of the most progressive messaging and inclusion of LGBTQ+ and race, season 9 ended up being a layered allegory while also still sticking to its core concepts and exploding with success. This is hands down the best season of the series. Amazing 9.5-9/10
