[Possible Spoiler Part - again it is speculation about viability of Season 2 and possible variations]
I really hope for another big Season of Frieren, but given that first season covers 60 chapters and there are 127 currently (with one every 2-3 weeks on average) - that would make waiting for Season 3 a bit long. Though they could simply adapt similar amount of volumes, but that would leave Season 2 ending on big cliffhanger (I mean most ones end on cliffhanger, they want you to buy the next one, but this one is a bit bigger than usual... I guess it depends on how they would do the finale) - I'm pretty sure fans would be livid. But good director could pull it off and leave fans happy maybe?

I mean Serie started "first class mage" thing, because Flamme asked her for it, millennium earlier and she finally decided to do it (remember her saying that for elves even delaying decision for millenium is an option?). But also (without spoiling) I would say to gain some control and maybe find some skilled mages. Hope for something to spark her interest again, since while we don't know her age, the "reasonable" assumptions I saw are between 5.000 and 13.000 years old for Serie's age.
It is in a way as you said - she was bored through peaceful era and created "Magic Association". She isn't a bad person, she is very different from Frieren, but also unlike Frieren she has much more experience with working with Humans. Remember how devastated Frieren was when Himmel died? Imagine going through it couple hundred times with your every human student and you can see why she cynically states that she shouldn't take human students. I won't say more, because they might show something in last episode, but Serie isn't exactly indifferent, though admittedly she feels cold as heck. We can talk about it on Friday.
I didn't include any information from Manga - further than this episode. Many things here are speculations either made by fans or assumptions using logical/educated guesses..
[Potential Spoilers ahead - though I'm avoiding them as much as possible - just number of chapters currently out and viability for Season 2 - abundance of caution, but I don't know what you consider a spoiler - one reactor banned me for saying - on a different show - "Ooooh, I can't wait for next episode, it is one of my favorites!" - on second thought I will move it to another reply, so if anyone thinks it is a spoiler, just say the word and I will delete it immediately]

Found some comments on reddit stating that Serie is just the ultimate tsundere. She says she doesn't really care for Flamme, but we see a few episodes ago, she still thinks of her, and even this episode still likes flowers (indicating she uses the flower bed magic to create the flowers in the last test maybe?).
She hates on her human 1st class mages not living long enough, but remembers all their magic and even personality traits. Only disappointed in the fact that they can't become even better, due to age, and not being able to detect her mana suppression.
On that, what Serie was saying was that her suppressed mana is as large as Frieren's unsuppressed mana, because she always is keeping it suppressed, hence why she smiled when Fern could tell. Mana is can only grow bigger with time/age and training.
Elves and demon's have a lot of time so hence the large mana. Frieren focused herself on suppressing her mana, collecting useless spells, and helping humanity evolving their magic (the white Zoltraack, Clone Frieren last episode used the original Zoltraack the black one, meant for killing humans/humanoids). Hence why Serie thinks she is unskilled for her age; she never focused on the normal aspects of training, expanding mana and combat.
I think Frieren + her party used more guerrilla tactics against the demons most of the time, but could go toe to toe when needed. But even then we heard that they got overwhelmed at times i.e. vs Qual/Aura.

We didn’t get to see what she said to wyrbel, Denken, the copycat man, or Ubel… however you spell their names.
And I have to know because I’m SO INVESTED IN DENKEN

That a great take on the test. Fern pass because she see herself as a first class mage nobody else did. And Serie said Frieren didn't see herself as a first class mage but for completely different reason😁. It come back to what I think is Frieren is not interest in being a Serie First Class Mage.
Also note that there are still people left that hasn't been evaluated so next episode we will see if it hold.

To be fair there are a lot of things I only catch on my 2nd viewing. And because I listen to everything you said and kind of over analyse it. At least with some show like Frieren. I was oblivious to the mana and a lot of other things in my first viewing.
So don't say you failed. You did fantastic and initiate discussion and reflection about the show.
We don’t know how much Series suppressed her mana but I guess it’s by a lot. She might suppress it only a little bit but I doubt it. What I can’t figure out is why she does it.
I agree with you that Frieren like magic for magic. And Serie like stuff that are useful to her and she look down on everything else.
It’s possible that Serie could have defeated the Demon King. I think the first reason we got when Flamme was there is she is not willing to have a peaceful area. The 2nd reason less strong in this episode is Frieren defeated with her party. Serie looked down on everyone so she would not go into any party. And she doesn’t learn useless spells so Himel would never have seen the flower spell and not seek her out. But she might be able to do it alone.
Next thing I had to rewatch it a third time since I just noticed something else. For the First First class Mage. Serie said it’s been more than half a century, so 50+ years. We are 29 years after the death of Himmel. We know that they could watch the 2nd meteor shower so 50+29 years is about more than 79 years after the defeat of the Demon King. It means that Serie was so bored in the peaceful area that she started the First Class Mage. 😅 Ok the last one is only wild speculation.

I think she wouldn’t have passed, but she still would’ve gotten the offer to be her student. Serie would probably still see the potential in her, especially given her young age.

Ah yes I forgot she did tell her she would pass no matter what she said so I guess she would still think she could pass even if she didn’t believe in herself and she would still want to pass if she knew Frieren wasn’t going to be able to because at least one of them needs 1st class mage status to continue on their journey.
Question just for fun. What if Fern couldn’t conceive of herself being a first class mage but she could still sense serie’s mana fluctuations. Do you think serie would still pass her? I’m 50/50 considering serie’s personality.

I think the detection moment just sparks her interest. It’s what prompts her to look deeper and realize what Fern is. After all, other people have become First Class without that ability. So I don’t think it’s the prerequisite. It’s just what grabs her attention.

I think Fern still wanted to pass. And she could still conceive of herself passing. Especially since Frieren had told her nothing she could say would make her fail. And Serie rejects everyone else because they can’t conceive of themselves being first class mages. Fern can. Not only has Frieren reassured her, but look at what she just accomplished in the tomb. She doesn’t go into the interview hoping she is worthy. She knows she is. And, presumably, Serie’s intuition reaffirms that she is worthy.

Well after reading all that I feel like I must have missed a lot and kinda failed in my review 🥲 Sorry guys.
Ok so serie’s displayed mana was her suppressed mana, hence why we see a fluctuation because if it wasn’t suppressed it wouldn’t fluctuate. Got it. So she’s probably way older than Frieren. And way more powerful.
Oh I must have read that wrong. She said UNskilled for her age. Got it. Yeah I feel like it harkens back to what I said. She just has a pure love of magic without any clear goals as of now other than reaching Ende and finding more spells. She doesn’t have great ambition or drive. She’s more go with the flow and enjoy life lol
I wonder if serie really couldn’t have defeated the demon king. We didn’t see the fight so we don’t know how powerful he really was and after seeing serie’s mana I wonder if she could have overpowered him. I know flamme said she wouldn’t defeat the demon king but I think she was speculating that it WOULD NOT happen because she knew serie didn’t care to defeat him because she cares little for peace so why would she? Frieren, on the other hand does so she has more drive/desire to defeat him. I wonder if that’s what she meant?

So in conclusion what you’re saying is she can tell what each person’s intentions are and she only passes students who want to pass or can see her mana fluctuations. Because I’m pretty sure fern didn’t want to pass at the end once she rejected the offer to become serie’s student yet she still passed her. Is that correct?

I think Serie’s intuition is always right in that Frieren doesn’t want to be a first class. She only tries so she can continue her journey. She doesn’t try. Fern however, always tries. Anything she does has to be to the best she can. Like I think Frieren could see Serie’s mana fluctuations, but she’s never bothered to look close enough. That’s the biggest difference between Frieren and Fern.
While I also loathe Serie’s attitude I love her in the show because she shows what true coldness is. Frieren has never been truly cold. Serie is. She’s like Frieren reflected through a mirror darkly.

Super long comment but that what you get went you post a 48:39 minute reaction 😁 Love it by the way ❤ more long discussion 😋
Here we go.
Never watch Spice and Wolf looking forward to it.
Frieren is not confirmed for season 2 but it’s been so popular and they have enough material right now so they would be foolish to not make a season 2.
First scene with the random old dude again. I was asking did I get the right episode 😅
Lavine and Kanne's little scene was so cute.
Some of us have to work no matter how foul our mood is, So relatable 😁
About Helping people pick themself up. I think you are doing great with what you said through your reaction. When you pause and talk to the character but really to us. ❤
He should have charged more for the repair but I guess during the show Frieren doesn’t have a lot of money. They show the team struggling for money a couple of times and she always prefers grimoire as payment. 😅
Frieren care a lot about them. It’s quite a change from the first episode where we didn’t know her that well. I guess she was always caring but because she had a hard time with emotion it took the journey for us to see it.
Serie has a point, the 3rd test is supposed to be even harder so those who pass just because they were there at the right time without skill would have been killed by the 3rd test.
Hello Kota 😻
Frieren is unskilled for her age since she doesn’t pursue combat magic most of her learning is other magic and controlling mana. So compared to the same age Serie who loves to fight and get combat magic she has less combat skill. But as we see she has a lot of other things going for her. All the useless spells end up being useful. She did defeat the Demon King and as Flamme said it’s not something Serie could have done.
I believe Serie is scary powerful if you read between the lines, He displays mana is equal to Frieren full mana. And she is suppressing it hence the fluctuation. So her real mana is way way more. 😨
I guess the way Serie talk is because of the level difference. She could be more like Frieren but we establish that she is not. And we haven’t spent a lot of time with her. The only moment is when Frieren told her of Flamme death and they walk when we see the child Flamme memories. Even then on the surface what she was saying was cold but I guess underneath there was something more. Don’t get me wrong you have the right to not like her and I tend to agree.
Well Serie did set up the whole First-Class Mage system. It didn’t exist before and the old guy was the first first-class mage. And the main prize is one of her spells. So it makes sense that she has the last say. It’s not fair but rarely are the top things in life fair. There is always something that makes some people more privileged than other either connection luck or anything else.
And don’t take what I said too bad. We love your spiel that is why we come here. Keep up with it. 😁
In the end you are right, being a first class mage is a Serie thing. You are a series First Class Mage. Dunken if it weren’t for the right to go north he wouldn't even bother to become a first class mage. To him is not that valuable.
This flashback with Himel and the flower spell is so great. The “useless” flower spell is what got her with Himel and the rest of the group. Again Frieren useless spell is what got her where she is and got her team to defeat the demon king. Serie could not have done it. Serie could never go with Himel’s group. Flamme was right all along. Serie doesn’t have the personality to defeat the demon king.
Ok here Fern knows Serie displayed mana is suppressed so like I said Serie is way scary.
Even the top first class mage never saw Serie fluctuation so Fern is so OP in mana control and visualisation.
After episode.
Yes I would guess the only other people to see the fluctuation is Flamme and Frieren.
What Frieren actually said is she intended to fail both Fern and herself. But she could not fail Fern despite her first intention.
Series intuition is always right but it’s a Series First Class mage status. Frieren doesn’t see herself as an Series First-Class mage and even from the beginning. She doesn’t have the same value in pursuing magic. Serie said that Frieren is less skilled than she would have been if she pursued combat magic. It doesn’t align with her vision of a first class mage.
I think they said Fern is scary good for her age, I believe Sense said it. And I believe she passed her 3rd class exam with top marks. And she is way more powerful in detecting and concealing mana than the other first class mage and way younger. So Fern is more skilled for her age than other people and Frieren is less skilled in Serie eyes.
I think Serie is a very impulsive person. When she first meets Frieren she immediately offers her a spell of her choosing then when she refuses she says she is not worth it. And she said she took on Flamme as an apprentice on a wimp. So whoever takes her fancy she does things on a wimp. I guess that's how the first class started. She took the first one on a wimp based on her intuition. Which proves that he was the greatest mage of his time. However, Serie is disappointed that the best mage of his time didn't live long enough to be even greater. It doesn’t invalidate her intuition that he was the greatest.
Serie and Frieren see magic differently. Serie is all about combat and efficiency. Frieren love all kind of non combat magic.
About having Serie as a master,
“I think I forgot why I love magic in the first place”
A Few episodes ago in Flamme flashback Frieren went from answering I love magic to somewhat liking it. And that is because Flamme has been teaching her combat magic. And that one of the reason Frieren now seeks all the other types of magic.
Ok Great discussion one more episode to go
Take Care 😋
