Unohana was trying to let her past behind her and to become a healer, so she let Zaraki "borrow" the name Kenpachi (he wasn't the first they were multiple "Kenpachis" before he got to the Sereitei), but he wasn't really THE kenpachi, since she was still around all this time. So yeah, it's a passing of the torch thing, a classic "power exchange" between the two best swordmans of the generation, very "bushido" way of phrasing it but it's clearly inspired by samourai code, the whole fight between the two in Muken is, the fact that they clearly talk to each other in their thought is a metaphor for "the way of the sword" and how samourai talked to each other souls while batling to the death without saying a word out loud, seing everything in slomo etc. I'll add that Zaraki named the little girl "Yachiru" because he was in admiration of the real Yachiru "unohana" Kenpachi since he met her and fought her as a child, so it's a well connected circle, I love this storyline !

2024-04-26 10:43:52 +0000 UTCOkay I just started to watch your reaction to episode 21, and I feel the need to clarify this. So the name he received was "Kenpachi" and not "Unohana". Remember that there can only be one Kenpachi at a time, and the name is only passed down to another after they kill the current Kenpachi. So Kenny didn't have a name, and he took the name "Kenpachi" believing he was the strongest. Kenpachi Zaraki, "Zaraki" being the 80th district of Rukon, where he was from. Yachiru Kenpachi (Unohana) eventually gave up the name when she bacame Captain of Squad 4, but She hadn't been killed until just recently. That's when Zaraki truly received the name Kenpachi. TLDR; Keep calling him Kenpachi I hope this made sense, but I suck at explaining things.
