People frequently go missing in that part of the swamp due to the dark creature lurking within. Hannibal isn’t in danger though, because he is very intimately acquainted with the resident swamp monster. (A hannigram swamp monster AU!! :D)
I had the wicked thought that maybe Will is one of the bodies Hannibal puts in there... And Hannibal gets a fun surprise when he comes back...

I imagine that Will wants to affect revenge on Hannibal. Hannibal wants this, bc he knows dying at Wills hands would cause Hannibal to become an undead horror himself, therefore insuring an eternity of swamp haunting together. Will’s revenge turns into rejecting Hannibal’s advances (invitations to kill him) and that is how our love story begins.
