I started making these oc Pokémon trainer designs back in October, and it has been one of those projects I've been treading through very slowly. While I initially attempted to draw them in the style of the Sugimori artworks, I made the decision to finish the rest of them in a style I am more familiar with, going back and revising the designs I have already done.
For the first 3 pngs the left design is the old one while the right is the revised one. I only included the current state of Erika and Ari since they were barely tweaked.
Experimenting with styles is fun so I would have loved to continue mimicking the Sugimori style, however I have gotten more ambitious with this project and felt if I wanted to finish it in a feasible time I should continue it in way I most confident doing. You can prefer either one, but I felt this way I could get this done more efficiently and did not have to restrict myself to a certain look.
The transition was fairly simple, as I have only drawn 5 of the designs and Keita was the only one completely finished. I went through each layer and deleted all the layers I shaded with watercolor, redoing it with flat color. I use vector layers for my line art so I just increased the thickness of the vectors and changed them to not be a softer black. I did want to keep some semblance of the style I was replicating such as the eye design so they still have a bit of a stylistic appearance compared to when I usually draw them.
So far, Keita is done and Miranda is almost done. Somiya and Erika have their flat colors, but I may make some tweaks before I get to shading them. Ari still needs to be colored in. There are other ocs I have sketched along with their main Pokémon, and I will keep you all updated on the progress of those designs too.
